How AI Advances Climate Change?

Welcome to the Master Class of Week Five!

For the week five, the classes are available for you to have deeper understanding of AI and climate change, AI and low-carbon transition, and sustainable design. All of them are recorded classes, so you can watch them at your own pace.

Please kindly find following background information for this week's classes.

Session I: AI for SDG: Pathways For Making This A Reality, With A Focus On Climate Action

Lecture:

Cyrus Hodes

Co-founder of the World Climate Tech Summit

Class Introduction:

AI systems represent one of the most powerful technological tools we possess to help tackle this most complex system which is climate change. Understanding how we can apply AI is a useful step for the global community to collaborate to successfully address humanity’s most pressing challenge. In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore what does AI for Climate Action represent, and in particular how AI systems can help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A series of short case studies will highlight these angles, following Bill Gates’s framework (“How to Avoid a Climate Disaster”): How we make things; How we plug-in; How we grow things; How we go around, and How we keep cool and stay warm.

Session II: Sustainable Design And Creative Thinking

Lecture:

LIU Xin

Deputy Director at Industrial Design Department of Tsinghua University, Director at Eco-Design Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Coordinator at Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability Lab for Tsinghua University

Class Introduction:

This Master Class discusses the basic concepts and strategies of sustainable design and the principles, methods, and characteristics of design thinking. It will illustrate such ideas through real-world design projects from the Eco-Design Research Institute and the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. It is hoped that participants can use tools and concepts from this Master Class to help inspire their own innovative SDG-related design.

Session III: AI History And How It Helps With Low-Carbon Transition

Lecture:

XU Shizhen

Chief Architect of RealAI

Class Introduction:

This class consists of two major sessions. In one session we will firstly trace back to the origin of AI, and then lead you through the journey to modern AI technology. Major events and technology progresses will be highlighted in this 'history of AI' session. The other session coming afterwards, will be about AI applications, which are narrowed down to under low-carbon transitioning scenarios. The session will introduce possible ways that AI will help reduce carbon emissions, and finally show some successful use cases.
